How To Cope With Sleep Deprivation After Birth

A newborn’s first instinct is to feed and sleep in a pattern and quantity that varies from baby to baby. It is impossible to predict how a baby will adjust to life outside the womb and what to expect, as every experience can vary greatly. This means each parent must be flexible and patient during those first few weeks.

I remember laying in my hospital bed following birth, my son swaddled comfortably in the crib next to me, just a few hours old. He slept all the way through the night and I didn’t sleep a wink because I was so eager to ensure his safety and wellbeing. We have evolved to instinctively protect our young and be on guard, which makes relaxing difficult from the offset.

After returning home, he began waking every hour for milk and cuddles, which I was thrilled to give him, but exhausted responding to his regular needs.

During that challenging time, I developed some ‘survival tricks’ in order to keep my energy up and maintain some sanity.

Prioritise

Cleaning, laundry and cooking feel instinctively necessary after birth because we want to provide clean and healthy surroundings for our newborn. This is the time to reach out and allow for some help. Ask a friend to bring a lasagne over, don’t worry about any laundry or superficial mess that’s not essential, and just making feeding, resting and eating a priority.

Drink Water

Water wakes us up, keeps our bodies hydrated, helps replenish energy especially when breastfeeding and helps to keeps our mood stable. It also has been proven that well hydrated people have better quality sleep.

Take Regular Showers

Showers wake us up, especially if we use uplifting scented shower gels and shampoos. Lemon, mint, juniper berry and grapefruit are excellent for increasing energy and waking the mind. You could even burn these as essential oils. There’s nothing worse than feeling tired and grubby at the same time, and showers can make us feel much better.

It Won’t Last Forever

Remember this is a temporary arrangement. Most babies sleep a little better after 3 months, some take longer and others can adjust into a routine much more quickly. Remember this is not going to last forever.

Nourish Yourself

Bodies after birth need nourishment and care. Whether you birthed naturally or via a C-Section, whether you breast feed, express or formula feed, all bodies need wholesome foods such as fresh vegetables, high vitamin fruits or smoothies, iron-rich food such as spinach, nuts and fish along with treats and carbohydrates for extra energy.

Ask For Help If You Need It

Midwives, health visitors and GP’s are all available after birth. Stay in touch with them and ensure you communicate any problems surrounding sleep, general health or baby problems. Ask family and friends to help, and if you have a partner, ask them to take on a few hours a day doing jobs or looking after the baby so that you get time alone to sleep or just be peaceful.
