The Drinks Are On Me

Everything your mother never told you about breastfeeding

Veronika Sophia Robinson

The Drinks Are On Me ~ Reviewed by R. Strauss

Everyone, and I mean *everyone*, should read a copy of this book.

Whether you are planning a baby 'sometime', never planning a baby, pregnant, a Health Visitor, a father of ten children, a midwife, a bank clerk or a breast feeding counsellor you will find something contained within the 200+ pages to nourish you.

If you think you have nothing left to learn about breast feeding, then think again...

Reading this book is like curling up on a sofa with Mrs Robinson, sharing a cosy heart to heart. Her words are inspirational and she cannot fail to connect with you through her brutal honesty.

I cried, laughed (Eliza's darling comment about room for a third breast on page 11 will not fail to tug at your heart strings), wanted to give birth again, and allowed her wisdom to wash through me as I cocooned myself in every word.

Mrs Robinson's integrity shines through every page. It is a work of unconditional love, commitment and energy that stands as a beacon of hope in a world of apathy, guilt and fear.

The book is written in bite-sized chunks; making it perfect for time-poor people everywhere. Leave it in the toilet windowsill to read in those few moments of solitude each day; I'm sure the author won't mind.

This book is factual and practical, with advice about the best foods to eat and herbs to take to ensure optimal health. It is spiritual, not forgetting that every mother needs to nourish herself. It is daring, thought-provoking, profound and comprehensive.

It's a life changing book, and I weep for children and adults everywhere who were never able to claim their birthright to breastfeeding.

Mrs Robinson has given us all a beautiful authentic gift in her writing; so please, go and indulge yourself. You are worth it, and so are our future generations.

About the book

The Drinks Are On Me reclaims and celebrates the ancient art of breastfeeding ~ a natural way of feeding our babies which has allowed humanity to exist for half a million years. The book argues that the rapid decline in breastfeeding rates is in direct proportion to the increase in physical, emotional and psycho-sexual dysfunction seen throughout western society. Our healthy existence as a species is dependent on full-term breastfeeding becoming the norm again.

Veronika Robinson draws on her rich experiences as a breastfeeding mother ~ a ten year journey which included five years of tandem nursing ~ and explains why breastfeeding is vital for the healthy continuation of the species. Embracing a holistic view, she shows how to overcome common and not so common, breastfeeding challenges, whether they be physical, emotional or cultural.

This book is equally suitable for new and experienced mothers. It’s essential reading for all professionals (doctors, midwives, dentists and health visitors) who influence a mother’s choice to breastfeed or not. The author deliberately takes a step outside the usual breastfeeding knowledge to present a new framework in which to view how we nourish and nurture our children.

The Author: A former journalist, Veronika Robinson is the editor of The Mother ~ an international magazine publishing cutting-edge information on optimal parenting. She founded The National Waterbirth Trust (New Zealand) and co-created the Peaceful Pregnancy CD; works as a celebrant and appears regularly in the media to promote gentle and conscious parenting.

The Drinks Are On Me is her third book and integrates her personal experience as well as professional advice, based on her work as a holistic breastfeeding counsellor.
