Our ethos
Fertility awareness
Recognising the cycles within the female body allows us to take
responsibility for our reproductive health. The health of our unborn
children is determined by the health and well-being of both parents
in the two years before conception.
Conscious conception
It is vital for both parents to take full responsibility for pre-conception
care. This involves cleansing the internal environment of the body
and removing toxins from the home and work environments. Our emotional,
mental and spiritual health are of equal importance in preparing
for conception. Inviting a soul to join a family is an act best
undertaken with reverence. At The Mother we recognise that conception
begins long before sperm and egg unite. Conception begins with conscious
intention. To be clear in our decision to welcome a soul Earthside,
it is important to know ourselves intimately and embrace our whole
being with self-love. This is the foundation of what it means to
consciously conceive. We can never truly love another unconditionally
unless we are able to love ourselves. It is here, before conception,
that we find the blueprint for our parenting. Learning to parent
ourselves is key.
Peaceful pregnancy
Our mother's womb is our first physical home. The Mother magazine's
vision is for every pregnancy to be a wanted pregnancy and for mothers
to be nurtured and cherished in this most important of jobs. Growing
a baby is physical, emotional, mental and spiritual ~ and all aspects
work together when creating human life. Our primal environment shapes
us for life.
Conscious and ecstatic birthing
At The Mother we don't wish to perpetuate the belief that 'birth
is painful or dangerous', but rather, that birth can be beautiful,
ecstatic and indeed, orgasmic ~ just as nature intended.
Full-term breastfeeding
All the evidence ~ anthropological, neuro-biological, physical,
and psychological ~ indicates that full-term breastfeeding (and
child-led weaning) is the optimum for our children. Our articles
aim to dispel the common myths which get in the way of successful
and sustained breastfeeding.
In arms phase & co-sleeping
Honouring our babies and children through carrying them in a sling,
and shared sleep (family bed), is a fundamental aspect of The Mother
magazine's holistic, attachment parenting philosophy.
Family
Our articles aim to reflect the importance of family as the basis
of society. We do this by prioritising how we care for our children.
This includes nurturing each other through face to face, real life,
loving relationships, and providing a constant mother-figure during
the child's early years. We encourage parents to read their child's
cues from birth, throughout childhood.
Natural Immunity
By working with the body and its innate ability to maintain vibrant
health, we support the immune system with natural whole-foods and
lifestyle choices, and, if necessary, complementing with natural
therapies. Vaccine awareness is encouraged.
Modern Technology
We recognise that tvs, dvds, computers and mobile phones are commonplace
in modern society. At The Mother we encourage awareness of the issues
around tv/computer use for parents planning to conceive, pregnant
and breastfeeding mothers, and for children, both at home and in
school. This is best done by avoiding or minimising their use, especially
for young children, and by providing clear boundaries for older
children.
Consumerism
We encourage deliberately conscious and aware consumerism. This
means avoiding unnecessary consumption and disposable products where
at all possible.
Natural products
Toys ~ for our children's toys and teething rings, we avoid anything
toxic and environmentally unfriendly, such as plastic, and provide
natural products, either directly from our gardens or by using wood,
hemp, etc.
Cleaning products ~ in the home we encourage the use of cleaning
products which don't contain toxins. For example: lemon, vinegar.
Body and hair care ~ we encourage the use of DIY body and hair cleansers,
and eco and body-friendly cleaning products.
Human-scale education
We value and recognise that children learn best in informal, child-led
situations. In human-scale schools, small groups facilitated by
conscious and love-centred adults provide optimal education. Our
articles reflect the value of small schools, forest schools and
home education.
Personal responsibility
At times most of us compromise the optimum, both in terms of parenting,
and life in general. We encourage taking responsibility for the
outcomes of our choices, actions and inaction.
Mother Nature
By spending as much time in nature as possible we can connect with
our true sense of who we really are. This is vital for all human
beings, but particularly so for our children and those whose day
to day lives are devoid of trees, grass, water, stars, sun and moonlight,
birdsong, insects and animals.
