What's in The Mother's mailbag ~ pre-2006
Here's a selection of letters from the current and all back
issues of The Mother.
I've just got TM Issue 13 today, and was just sitting outside enjoying
both it and the sunshine. I felt compelled to drop you a line straight
away, just to say how competent I found your reply to Rachel's letter
about the summer camp. As I started to read, I felt apprehensive,
in case you wouldn't say everything I myself was feeling about it.
But you did. I read it thinking 'yes, yes, yes!' So thank you for
saying it for me; I for one felt your reply was perfect; firm, understanding,
explanatory and compassionate. I now feel even happier in my support
of The Mother project, and can see how safe it is with your hands
and heart to guide it.
With my very best wishes,
Vicky Sherrard

As ever I feel truly blessed to receive the magazine.
I often wondered after those first few issues, how the impetus
could ever be sustained! How the raw earth beauty and gifting could
possibly express into the continuum of today.
And yet it has!! The uncurling of the petals, the ongoing sharing
of deeper and deeper fragrance continues to touch our hearts and
our core communion with The Mother.
Each issue is unique. Each birth story a magickal tale of mystery
and power.
The ongoing inclusion of life issues from education, to rural versus
urban living and soooooooooooo much more.
I truly feel nourished by the reading.
I applaud the natural inclusion of the dads, siblings, family.
The Mother is Sacred Space - a Shrine at which life is consecrated
and celebrated.
As a reader, I feel so proud to be part of this and I feel so
proud that you Veronika continue to stand in your circle and sing
your song in beauty and strength.
I love you. I honour the expression of Spirit within your heart.
Namaste,
Ruth Allen

Yesterday a friend passed me your mag to read an article, hence
I became engrossed and couldn't put it down. I was delighted to
realise that I know you from when you guys lived here (in New Zealand).
We now have two boys Bodhi and Eli. Ruth was Elis midwife
so I saw Bethanys birth video.
Eli and I are holidaying this summer in the UK to catch up with
family and friends. I would love to make contact and am very interested
in unschooling, healthy veggie food, etc.

I can't emphasise enough what an important voice yours and the
other voices in your magazine are. I think so many of us would just
give up in the face of adversity and opposition if it wasn't for
forums like The Mother. I'm looking forward very much to the camp.

I end each night with a little quiet time in my bed with The Mother
magazine. Each night Im inspired and comforted, so thank you!
I need you guys!! Ive been spreading the word about my terrific
find.

There are a few things that I just love about The Mother that
I find so original. One is the fact that spirituality and parenthood
are so intertwined in this magazine. Ive never found a magazine
that has done something like that. The Mother really talks about
pregnancy/childbirth for what is, an incredibly transforming and
spiritual experience. And, of course, I really enjoy the natural
parenting styles that are represented so normally. I really want
more people to see this magazine because they will realise how very
normal homeopathic parenting is.

I always look forward to The Mother arriving. I can absorb myself
where I feel I belong, the comfort of like minded parents and parents
to be. The warmth, the love, the sharing is so important to me.
Thank you for this wonderful magazine.

A beacon of light amidst the commercial consumerism and materialistic
crap out there! Great to realise youre not the only ones who
seem to be on an alternative to the mines bigger/better
than yours ethos.
Thanks

I love the mag. Its really on our wavelength ~ its
a breath of fresh air in an insane world. Lots of thanks and best
wishes.

I wait impatiently for the next issue. The Mother magazine grows
and feeds my spiritual and loving nature. I have two children. My
daughter Rachael and my son Ruaraidh, 18 months, who was a little
miracle
a totally natural baby, unimmunised, organic, still
breastfeeding. We cuddle up together every night to sleep and read
articles in The Mother magazine. Ode to a natural sleep.
Thank you!

You have opened my mind and heart ~ your magazine is an immense

Thank you for your wonderful magazine. Im still not living
a life as holistic as I would wish, but your magazine provides me
with challenges and inspiration, plus a refuge from the mainstream
culture I live in.

Thank you for the sample. However, I would not be able to place
such a magazine in our waiting room because of too much nudity,
which I find rather offensive.

Thank you for your feedback. We realise that our magazine resonates
with a unique substructure of the birthing community ~ silent, usually,
for the exact common reason you have expressed. The art depicted
on the pages of The Mother is reader-sent: true bliss and peace
displayed through their faces. It is representative of their pregnancies
and their birthing joy.

Your magazine supports and encourages me in my mothering. I particularly
love the birth stories, unschooling, the Possible Mother column

feels like a harsh world.

Please subscribe a dear friend on my behalf who will also help
to share all these wonderfully inspiring ideas and thoughts with
women in France. I appreciate hearing from women further down the
line. Body Knowledge TM10, amongst many other things. Take care,
and love to you all at The Cottage. Many thanks and blessings for
all you are doing.

What a joy to read your article on homeschooling ~ The good, the
bad and the snugly. I can so relate to everything you talked about
and repeatedly laughed aloud while reading your article. Eliza and
Ian would get along extremely well. Just the other night, Ian, Abby
and I went to bed and I nursed Abby to sleep and then rolled over
to be next to Ian. I thought he was sleeping as his breathing was
calm and steady. I closed my eyes and started to drift into dreamland
when I heard him state: Mom, what are trains made of?
And so began the night time home schooling lesson.
What could be better than encouraging learning literally all day
and allowing those questions to be answered as they are thought
about rather than waiting for the appropriate time?
I applaud you for the great article.

In response to the article on Highly Sensitive Children, Id
like readers to know that there is a new yahoo email group for families
of HSCs who practise attachment parenting and unschool. The group

Thanks for all you do!

The New Zealand College of Midwives have endorsed the meningococcal
B vaccine programme ~ after giving their affiliates under three
hours (via email) to respond/comment, which is barely paying lip
service. As of October, Midwives here are required to register all
babies on the National Immunisation Register. Parents can subsequently
opt off but this means their childs details are still in the
system!

Veronika, to the moon and back, thank you! I received your magazine
and it has truly changed my life. Ive just sat and read your
article about Conscious Conception out loud while Steve painted
the kitchen orange and it has blown us away. It brings such reassurance
to know you are there, living, loving, being. I could barely read
parts of the article without openly sobbing or laughing ~ real emotions
that without doubt are an essential part of the healing process.
We all want to thank you for the amazing gift you are sharing
with the world. It does, and is, making a difference. Today it has
made a difference to our lives.
With much love and light

I have again really enjoyed the last issue of The Mother. I wanted
to acknowledge you for so clearly responding to the critical voice
about the camp rules. You have always been very clear in your communication
and people then have a choice whether they want to be in your presence
or not!

I have just received my sample copy of The Mother magazine this
morning. Ive devoured it from cover to cover and promptly
ordered a subscription. I just wanted to congratulate you, not only
on a wonderful magazine, but on publishing the highly critical letter
you received from Rachel Gooch, and your reply. It isnt every
magazine that so readily discusses the criticisms they receive in
such an honest and open way. I was pleasantly surprised.
I have to be honest and say I thought I would have reservations
about whether The Mother would suit me and my family. We co-sleep,
use slings, breastfeed and intend on child led weaning. We use cloth
nappies, are green minded and believe in natural birth. However,
we also eat meat (although only free range and organic), my son
is vaccinated, and being largely humanist/athiest, dont hold
spiritual beliefs of any kind. I worried that I would find the tone
of the magazine dogmatic and would be unable to place myself in
the landscape. However, partly because of your reply to that letter,
but mostly because of the interesting, surprising, passionate and,
most importantly, inclusive nature of your magazine, I felt every
bit a part of the world you and your contributors discuss ~ welcomed
with open arms!
How satisfying to have found a publication dedicated not only
to the issues I find important, but also to a wealth of other diverse
topics! As a woman who refuses to conform to the cookie-cutter role
of mainstream motherhood today, I find great strength in reading
stories and articles of other families who dare to be different
in whatever ways suit them. I enjoy the strong, uncompromising character
of the magazine ~ youre honest about what you stand for and
I find it inspiring.
I begin work as a trainee doula this Autumn and will be definitely
recommending The Mother magazine to the mamas I care for! Thanks
TM!

If you ever have what I call a human day, or a moment
in your life when you sit at your computer feeling glum, the children
being supreme experts at testing your patience, and, oh yes, yet
another bill was dropped through the mailbox, you feel unconnected
to Spirit, the earth and all that is beautiful around you, I would
like you to remember how much your magazine has changed my life.
Two years ago I was a 38 year old career woman and wife ~ nice
car, nice house, comfortable life. Id never really had all
those hormones that other women had when it came to children. Yes,
they are lovely, but nay, I couldnt eat a whole one.
Then I got pregnant and my friend bought me a copy of your magazine.
Wow!!! I dont even recognise that person anymore.
I understood how beautiful it was to have this new soul inside
me and how very precious she was.
I learned all about independent midwives and had the most amazing,
spiritual homebirth. We are definitely going to home educate her,
against all opposition.
She hasnt been vaccinated and only eats organic food. Shes
never been to see a doctor, only a herbalist. I respect her for
the beautiful soul that she is...and all this came from your magazine!
In between all this, after just a few weeks of our daughters
arrival, my husband fractured his spine, leaving him out of work
for over a year. Hes just got back to work doing care work,
something hes always wanted to do. We now live on £8K
a year as opposed to £30K a year. The house is being sold
for a much smaller two-bed, somewhere we can feel the earth. And
weve never been so happy.
I dont wear make up any more and my nails havent seen
nail polish since I cant remember when. My life is more whole
that it has ever been and most amazing still, Im now a very
young (but tired) 40 year old who is being honoured with another
souls arrival. So please, on those human days, just think
how much youve changed our little ones life, and smile,
because you are amazing.
Love, light and blessings

Thanks again for the wonderful Mother. Issue 12 arrived the day
after the due date of my fourth baby. It really lifted my spirits.
Rosana Pedzi Nyoko eventually came to join our family on March 5th,
16 days after her due date. It was a wonderful, peaceful homebirth,
unassisted and inspiring. Thank you to Georgina Kelly for her article,
Birthing and saying the great yes!
I vocalised throughout my two and three quarter hour labour, talking
to my baby and saying yes to all the sensations of birth.
I will treasure the experience all of my life.

I have just read my first issue of The Mother and absolutely loved
it. At last Ive found a magazine that cares passionately about
the things I do and makes me feel my parenting decisions are right.
Thanks so much.

Thank you so, so much for your beautiful magazine. Until very recently
I have been a full-time mother to my three children. My first two
children were born in hospital, taken away from me at birth and
assaulted by the usual barrage of medical interventions. Thankfully,
I realised that this was not the way for a child to be welcomed
into our world, and for the birth of my third baby I planned and
had a family home birth. Noah is now 17 months, is still breastfeeding
(to the dismay of some 'friends') and has been raised in a much
more child-centred approach.
I enjoyed reading and re-reading each article and know that I will
look forward to each issue - the empowerment and self-belief I have
taken from your magazine is guiding me towards a more natural, spiritual
and holistic family way of life ~ a journey I started two years
ago but until now has felt quite lonely.
I have recently started my midwifery training: I believe passionately
in birth and the birth of a family. I greatly look forward to allowing
your magazine to keep me centred on a loving and natural approach.
With best wishes

The Mother arrived today (the day my first born Daniel becomes
18) and the birthday of my becoming a mother. It also happens to
be Thanksgiving Day today and I have so much to be thankful for!
I feel quite emotional. Daniel was born in Cyprus where quite amazingly
I got hold of a La Leche League's Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.
So Daniel was breastfed, we had a family bed, we didn't spank him,
and he was homeschooled. I hardly knew anyone who practiced even
one of those let alone all! LLL and Summerhill were our 'mentors'.
Daniel is now in school doing his last year of A levels before moving
on to study Law. He never went to play school or school until he
was 15 1/2 He's looking forward to buying his own alcholic drink
tonight! And just a few days ago, my youngest son Robert, my baby,
turned 11. Will I renew my subscription? Of course I will! You keep
me in touch with the wonderful radicals who truly believe in their
babies' birthrights and in their vocation as mothers. It's a heartening
reminder that, in spite of the sad mothering I see around me, all
those wonderful mothers do exist and are nurturing one another with
their witnesses and stories. PS ~ What a wonderful mother you have!

To everyone involved in The Mother. First of all a huge thank
you for such a wonderful magazine ~ I have loved every issue and
can't begin to tell you how much it supports and nourishes me both
as a mother and a woman. I would love to share the gems that I read
on your pages and would like to give gift subscriptions to two of
my like minded friends.

Just received my first issue ~Summer 2004. Loved it. Please send
me back issues 2 -9. Please would you send some subscription forms
to pas onto other people. Thank you so much for a great magazine.
Its arrival was timely. Editor's notes were good medicine for me
after I weighed my baby (for the 2nd time only) and she had gone
down a percentile. I had felt she was doing great pre-weigh and
then post-weigh started to question whether I was providing her
with enough nourishment from breastfeeding. Had come to the conclusion
that she is thriving and that we'll forget the weigh-ins. She hated
it anyway! Then the next day TM popped through the door.

Shamefully late, but many, many thanks for a wonderful camp. Your
vision and strength are inspirational. Emily's birthday tea and
crown were so lovely, such a gentle, wholesome way of celebrating
another year. Also need to say 'wow' about the magazines. What a
privilege to be part of the publication. I love the way TM pushes
the boundaries and just when I'm getting comfortable it gives me
something else to think about! I want to thank Paul for doing his
ventriloquist show on Emily's birthday and helping to make her feel
special. I loved the music at night too and the birth video. How
brave to share such wondrous hours and what an amazing introduction
for our children to the miracle of birth!
Last but not least, your lovely girls. Our paths didn't cross much
at camp but they were good enough to share you and exchange a few
words with me about family celebrations and saving the earth. They're
certainly on the right track! Very much love, and huge , huge thanks
to you all, long may this wisdom and energy continue!

I wanted to say a HUGE thank you for all you did to make the camp

EXCELLENT - loved it all. Really love the inclusion of general
'life stuff' - loved all the pics, adored your editorial sharing
re ~ your mum (bless you both).
There are times I feel that the magazine reaches a pinnacle of 'can't
get any better' and yet each one seems to be a vibrant, alive and
passionate expression of perfection everytime!
I feel this is about more than just the content (which is wonderful)
- I personally feel it's about the sincerity/integrity and depth
of commitment you feel in this work and I want to celebrate you
Veronika for your passion and love.
I soooooooooooo respect and appreciate and celebrate the work you
are doing.
THANKYOU.

Not having had much love or much of a relationship with my own
mother I found I had a deep fear of how I would be with my own children.
My son, Joel Jaya, brought with him a deep connection with Mother
Earth and six years later my daughter, Tehya Lola, brought a connection
to The Mother magazine (another story). I have laughed and cried
along with Joel, Tehya and The Mother magazine and will be eternally
grateful for that opportunity.
Thank you

Hello! Thank you so much for kindly sending me the last copy of
The Mother magazine. It has a lovely, special story to it. My husband
and I have been trying to create life for a couple of years and
although I am fortunate in being able to talk to and work with my
unborn children, they haven't arrived here yet! I have been losing
heart a bit, actually.
Owing to moving house and difficulties renewing my subscription
on line, I missed an edition. Imagine my surprise when it landed
on my doorstep! The same day, two other happy coincidences gave
me courage and although the children still aren't here, I did find
a new, positive perspective that I did not believe I would have
found otherwise. Your kindness in sending out the magazine, even
when I hadn't paid, gave me hope. Please find enclosed my subscription
and a small donation for your kindness.
With love and best wishes for a peace-filled 2005

I am sending my renewal form to TM. I have been inspired, enriched,
moved to tears and laughter, challenged, informed and felt a real
sense of love and friendship among the readers of your magazine.
It is a much needed publication in these materialistic, logic orientated,
reductionist days, reminding us of the magic of childhood. I would
love to be in contact with other readers in the Derbyshire/South
Yorkshire area.
With love and friendship

A wonderful new year to you all. I just love receiving The Mother
~ it is very reassuring and always has new and fascinating articles
~ never written in a way which is critical of people's fixed ideas
but always gently and encouragingly supporting a much more natural,
child centred, loving approach.

Hearty congratulations on your brave and beautiful magazine! I

Thanks on behalf of everyone of us for starting something none
of us felt brave enough to take on! The bit about vaccine ingredients
made our hair stand on end
anti-freeze? Aborted human foetus
cells? Bacterial and viral DNA? Paint thinner? How on Earth can
they justify these as ingredients? Same when they try and feed babies
the worst bits scrapped off the factory floor, I suppose
because
no-one will notice by the time the food colouring is added and it's
been squished down into a jar labelled BABY FOOD. Blessings from
the Universe and much love.

If you are ever in the City for a day or to lead a weekend conference

have to meet up!

I have just read and made up a batch of the baby wipes that Hillary
Smith suggested, they are fantastic! Although in the Cloth Nappy
Tips section, they can be used by all. My daughter is almost out
of nappies now, I only wish I had had the tip earlier! I will never
buy wipes again. I use the bounty wipes version in a tub by the
loo for potty training. Thank you for such brilliant ideas and comments
and just for an all-round wonderful magazine!

Just a quick note to say --THANKS! I love your magazine, it's simply

Hello! I absolutely love your magazine and I share my copy with
all new mums I know! I am an aromatherapist and infant massage instructor
who used self-hypnosis and flower essences during my home waterbirth
on Halloween for baby number three this past year! I listened to
your CD (Peaceful Pregnancy) before and during labour and it was
wonderful. It helped my water to completely release because of the
soothing words. I truly believe that your CD is much better than
many others out there for helping women visualize and meditate.
Thank you for helping me with my wonderful labour! Your magazine
and CD are inspirational!!!
Jennifer Tan, California , USA
The latest mag was - as usual - brilliant! Many thanks for this
valuable resource and inspiration!
Thanks a lot!

Thank you for an intelligent, informative magazine.

Reading Barry's article, "Challenging the Monkey" (Winter,
Issue 8) made me laugh out loud!
His "monkey that sits on (his) left shoulder" is similar
to the monkey I carry! Mine, in comparison, is a huge Mama Baboon
with a Big Red Bottom! And, since she's too big to sit on my shoulder,
she's attached herself to my back! From this vantage point, she
can scramble in my hair - pulling it hard to get my attention; pulling
it out when she is disgusted; and screeching in my ear and bouncing
wildly when I've obviously coloured outside of the lines or merely
thought something 'inappropriate'. Thank you, Barry, for letting
us all know that sometimes we can just yell, "oh, shut the
hell up," and live to tell about it. SMILES!

I was recently shown a copy of your magazine by my antenatal yoga
teacher and I was very impressed by the articles which gave natural
remedies to common complaints and recipes for making your own baby
wipes!
Kirsty Pankhurst, Shropshire, UK
Thanks for all your great work! We both love reading The Mother
and often have to get sneaky at getting hold of it first. This month
Phil swiped it away as soon as I got distracted and dashed off to
have a bath. He then lay in the bath reading for almost an hour!
I finally got it back when I hopped in the bath. Two minutes later
I was joined by the boys. After another ten minutes, Jo was playing
at one end, Toby on one breast and me ~ finally able to read!

Please find enclosed the booking form for the camp. We are really
looking forward to this and meeting up with the other mad and wise
women who love The Mother magazine.
Catherine Bibian-Dalle, Bristol, U.K
First of all I want to join in with the praise that you receive
from so many parents! It's wonderful to read The Mother magazine.
It reminds me what the priorities are for my child ~ sadly, they
sometimes get watered down by mainstream info and attitudes of people
and institutions around me. I often sense that I am alone in my
thinking regarding schooling, freedom for my child to experiment
on his own; freedom to develop in his own time etc. He, by the way,
is my son Gregory who is now just over two and half years old and
who certainly knows what is good for him. He shows no signs of giving
breastfeeding because "Nini milk is sooo good for my body!"
Regarding the recent article Killing her Softly, I think it is
a very clever text and a potent eye opener! It is frightening what
we do to our own bodies if we follow the advice of advertisers for
cleaning materials and cosmetics!! If anybody is interested to read
more background and find alternatives, read Cleaning Yourself to
Death by Pat Thomas ISBN 0 7171 3162 9 (Published by NewLeaf, www.gillmacmillan.ie
) It is a comprehensive source of info about the toxicity of toiletries
and household products. It explains how the body reacts to that
overload and offers non-toxic alternatives. I certainly cleared
out a lot of creams, cleaners etc after reading it. Luckily I did
it before I was pregnant or breastfeeding.
Keep up the good work!

RE: Mother's medicine Bag, issue 8 editorial
A couple of things that would be in my medicine bag
A scented candle; my favourite poem (The lady of Shalot); all my
Mother Magazines; a hug and a good book. Currently I'm reading The
Dance by Oriah Mountain Dreamer, which I'm very much enjoying. Thank
you for The Mother.

(letter to a new subscriber on the motherlylove egroup)
I must warn you - you will never be the same again once you have
subbed to The Mother. I only subbed in November and I have changed
so much already. I used to think some of the things in there were
a bit "extreme" for me, but now that's where I want to
be. There should be a Public Health warning on the front page -
"This magazine will change your life in the most amazing ways".
Lucie (who can't believe she is now seriously thinking about
growing her own veggies and starting a compost heap!!)
Today I duly received the most recent copy. Thank you, and am going
to renew my subscription.
Really do look forward to sharing the insight of nurturing with
you, even though we are far away from each other...
Thanks.
Mariko Nakaya, Japan
Thank you unreservedly and often tearfully for The Mother magazine.
I discovered it long after both my births and now I know that I
am not alone and such a controversial freak!
Tara Perry, Brighton, UK
It's been said before but I'll say it again anyway: thank you
for your wonderful, inspirational and supportive magazine. I really
look forward to each issue, it always leaves me feeling nurtured
and encouraged. Please keep up the good work

Living in Portugal, it is always with great pleasure that I read
The Mother. An excellent reminder of not being alone. I particularly
enjoy your homeschooling experiences as we are on the 'radical unschooling'
road with our three children. It is an endless journey ~ learning
all the time. Thank you for such an inspirational and educational
magazine.
Parvine Damon, Algarve, Portugal.
I've loved every moment reading The Mother magazine and wished
I'd come across it during Faith's first few months
.although
she is now only 9 1/2 months old and so feel blessed to have come
across it at all!
Emma Southwood, UK.
You do a great job on the magazine. It is so fantastic and I show

This is the kind of magazine to savour well after the kids have
gone to bed, the recipe also includes a hot bath and candles!

The Sandpiper story did bring joy
and soaked my cheeks with
tears... how beautiful! If it were possible, I held my tiny babe
that much closer still after reading
and we lived several
lifetimes together with total appreciation of the other in that
one moment
and those that followed. Then came the perfectly
timed 'Conscious Conception and Peaceful Pregnancy'
I wonder
how many of us reading saw reflections of our own time spent in
our mother's wombs, our own childhoods and journeys
I wonder
how many of us suddenly felt a greater appreciation of the work
we do
and how we're turning it all round for OUR children?
Anyone who ever felt that motherhood is not a 'real' job
that
'real' jobs can only be obtained outside the home and involve a
wage coming in must surely now reappraise the situation.
The rest of issue five was great - as usual... TM is always eagerly
anticipated... even better now I have time to sit down whilst breastfeeding!
Again I send you the strength of a fleet of angels to help you continue
in all you do.
Maya, Cornwall, UK

I received TM10 today and it is brilliant! I have spent tonight
reading it. Your magazine is changing the way I live my life. I
love reading your column on radical unschooling.

A big thank you for the camp at Moondawn! We enjoyed it very much
and clearly an enormous amount of energy had been channelled into
making it a success. It was!
It was so good to see the children so free and happy!
L. Tomkins, UK
I can honestly say that the camp was something of an epiphany for
me
I haven't been camping in 15 years and to live really simply
for just that few days and among people who share many of the same
views, has just been mind-blowing. I have loved every minute of
it.
The whole atmosphere of the camp was so relaxed and feel good that
I am still readjusting back to my 'normal' life and honestly finding
it pretty difficult to do this. All I can say is that it is just
as well that the camp didn't last longer, because I would really
have found it difficult to come back home.
Jo, UK
A huge thank you from the bottom of our hearts for such a wonderful
camp experience. inspiring people with fantastic advice and some
incredible stories. We learned so much.
The Beanie Family, UK
I'm so impressed with your magazine and just love Jeannine Parvati
Baker's question and answer column. Her words speak the truth, a
truth that has become unspeakable in our culture. It is a relief
to hear it. Such cutting edge, high quality. Thank you
Jane Collings, Mother, Midwife, Australia
Thank you for your supportive and quite unique magazine.

It really is an inspiration piece of work and each issue brings
smiles, laughter and sometimes tears into our house.

I'm looking forward to the next issue ~ I feel like a hungry wolf
that devours it as quickly as possible! It fills such a deep gap
in our culture.
